Location: Copper Mountain

Conditions: Overcast Skies, average temps, a little wind at times, perfect corduroy, choppy snow, chunder, a little ice, and just typical mid season conditions.

Binding Adjustability: Both straps have flip cams for adjusting their length. The toe strap sits on a pin placement to center it on the frame as needed for your boot. There’s the standard forward lean adjustment so no surprises there. There’s multiple placements for highback rotation. The footbed can be slid forwards or backwards depending on the size of your boot and how the frame is adjust. Finally the frames heel cup is fully adjustable.

Straps: The straps are Bataleon’s take on Aux Tech and let me tell you how much I dig these. They’re a little thicker than others but damn do they feel good. They just contour to the boot shape so well. The heel strap doesn’t feel like there’s anything there and just locks you in letting the boot provide the padding to your instep. The toe strap is the best version I’ve used and fits just about any shape out there.

Ratchets: These are extra wide which makes feeding the ladder in easy. I did have one stick twice on me but these are samples so that shouldn’t be an issue. Overall they climb well and the one finger release tab works how you would expect it to.

Highbacks: There’s no added padding to the highback it’s just straight plastic and it’s a little wider. It does have a true zero which is nice because it’s not forcing you to bend your knees. Overall it does its job and isn’t the stiffest nor the softest thing out there.

Binding Flex: This is your standard run of the mill middle of the road all mountain binding flex. It has a little lateral give but it’s not so much that you’re sacrificing power out of it. The straps flex when you need them to but aren’t mush.

Ride: This is a very smooth ride. The two piece footbed adds dampening on top of the foam under the chassis. If you’re someone that typically feels everything with your board/binding combo this will help kill that off.

Rider in Mind: All mountain freestyle rider that has a little power behind them.

Personal Thoughts: So Rome and Bataleon are owned by Nidecker and put under the same umbrella. As you can see with the chassis of this binding. There’s nothing wrong with that as I know Rome makes solid bindings, I do own 3 pairs after all. What’s different here is the footbed, straps, and highback. Those three differences change how they ride. This is an extra damp binding, the highback feels non existent except when you push aggressively into it on a heelside turn. The strap are really the big difference, they’re just amazing. They countour so well, have 0 pinch points, and work how you would want. I’m actually tempted to order them for my Romes and just roll with it that way from here on out.
