Resort: Copper Mountain

Conditions: Sunny bluebird skies, blower pow to hot pow depending on how the sun was hitting it, slightly warmer temps, chop, chunder, ice, and perfect corduroy.

Flex: They redid the core this year and I got a sample so take this with advisement that since I rode it I’ve talked to them about this. They made this board noticeable stiffer, it’s less middle of the road and more just past it (the version I rode). This means that while the tips do have a little more flex than the mid section it isn’t drastically different. The torsional flex is almost all gone, this should be rectified by the time you read this.

Stability: With that stiffer core you get a more stable ride. The tips get very little chatter even at speeds or in rutted out terrain. This completely dissipates before it hits the insert pack. The center of the board just crushes through everything and deadens any kinetic vibrations right underfoot. This board was damp.

Ollies: That stiffening up of the tips changes the pop in this board. It’s still a skate-style pop that you don’t have to aggressively roll into but it just gives WAY more rebound. This board wanted to launch off everything.

Pop On Jumps: On jumps it just floated off the lip and got you into the air and set itself down. It’s a deck that wanted to launch further and deeper.

Butterability: You sacrifice a little butterability with the stiffer tips but my god is that platform so wide and beautiful for locking in. It just feels like a spatula through snow. You can put all your weight into it and it will still hold and snap you right back out.

Jibbing: This took a little more effort due to the stiffened flex. It still is an awesomely wide platform to lock into but the flex just made you work for it so hard. Going sideways it was less about locking in and more about balancing due to the flex between the feet. This will be rectified for production.

Carving: Sadly this is what took the biggest hit by stiffening the board up, but I did ride a sample so remember this will be fixed. The torsional flex was non existent this means that you couldn’t twist the board and ankle steer it, which is what it was designed for. This made it rigid edge to edge and you ended up throwing your weight into it to get it to lock in. On edge the stiffened tips gave so much power you could just lock in a carve and cut through everything in your path, but if you had to abruptly change direction it would fight you. Once the torsional flex is tweaked this won’t be an issue.

Personal Thoughts: I think I know a thing or two about the Lumberjack I currently own 3 of them and I’ve ridden every version of it. This was a sample and the core profiling was a bit aggressive, if I was maybe 40lbs heavier it would have been awesome, but as it stands this was not fun. I did however like the snap from the thickened up tips that was insane it just rebounded and popped you so much more. I do know after riding it and talking to Nate the owner this core profile will be tweaked to give more torsional flex and make this board more manageable.
