The Dirksen Derby is more than just any old snowboard race. It’s a celebration of snowboarding. It’s a fundraiser for organizations like Protect our Winters, Oregon Adaptive Sports, and at its very core, Tyler Eklund, a local snowboarder who was paralyzed the same year as the inaugural event. However, and perhaps most importantly, it’s also a family reunion. One where riders from around the country converge on Bend, Oregon and Mt. Bachelor for a weekend filled by an overwhelming sense of community.
This year’s race came after a gap year last season and brought with its return a heightened interest from riders near and far. So here it is, the blurry, the underexposed, and the poorly framed – a disposable photo essay from our weekend at Dirksen Derby 10.
We can’t get enough of the feeling of disposable cameras. It is a combination of having limited exposures, being fast, light, easy to use, and perhaps most importantly the completely unique aesthetic retained in each image. Disposables is a photo series featuring photos from our travels. Moments in time from when we hop on a plane until we warily unpack our bags. They aren’t all in focus or properly exposed, and they aren’t all great images, but each and every photo speaks to experience and the many fragmented moments that together constitute travel and adventure.
