Driving in/around…

Hello, I’m considering a trip to Salt Lake City to board Brighton, Alta & Snowbird for a week and will be renting a car. Do I need to have chains on the rental car to get up through both Little & Big Cottonwood Canyon or are the road pretty easy to drive through with chains? I’ll mostly likely be staying in downtown SLC at the Plaza Hotel near Temple Square
