La Sambuy, a charming family-oriented resort nestled in the French Alps near Mont Blanc, is likely experiencing its last ski season. Once an affordable and delightful Alpine retreat away from the bustling larger resorts, it now stands with its lifts dismantled and the mountainside devoid of snow. The mayor of La Sambuy lamented in an interview with CNN, "Previously, we used to have snow from early December to late March," but last winter saw only "four weeks of snow, and even then, it was scarce...the slopes quickly revealed stones and rocks." Unfortunately, La Sambuy faced financial impracticality, staring at an approximate loss of €500,000 ($530,000).

The closure of these smaller, family-friendly ski resorts deals a significant blow to those in search of a more peaceful skiing experience and to the ski industry as a whole. While large resort conglomerates persist, the vitality of the industry relies on the presence of small, independently operated resorts, enhancing the accessibility of skiing. The landscape of winter is evolving, and for the ski and snowboard industry to endure, collective action is imperative.
