Protect Our Winters, a coalition dedicated to preserving outdoor recreation against the impacts of climate change, is championing a proposed legislation aiming to utilize Energy Department loans to provide benefits to communities that host transmission infrastructure. The additional funds generated would be channeled into community infrastructure projects located in the vicinity of these new transmission lines. Collaborating with Representative Ann McLane Kuster, a Democrat from New Hampshire, the group's team, along with outdoor sports enthusiasts, is rallying for backing on this draft bill. Their aspiration is for the bill to garner broad, bipartisan support upon its formal introduction. The organization made its way to Washington last week to rally for this cause.

The legislation in question seeks to create a "Community Economic Development Transmission Fund" by imposing an additional 0.5 percent on the interest accrued from Energy Department transmission loans. Communities that host these transmission lines, upon certification, would qualify for disbursements intended for a range of community enhancements, determined by a formula designed to ensure the fund's long-term sustainability.
