SAM Magazine Honors Industry Veterans Matt Peterson and Jeremy Cooper
Ask anyone who has spent time riding in Tahoe if they know Matt Peterson and it’s really likely they’ll reply with a story about the Midwest-born-Tahoe-local’s effusive stoke, his love of riding, and how much he has given–and continues to give–back to snowboarding through his career in the resort world (Matt is the vice president of marketing at Palisades Tahoe).
Head a eastward and you’ll surely hear people reference the work of Jeremy Cooper, who is based in the Midwest as the vice president of mountain sports development at Boyne Resorts, the owner and operator of perennial favorites like Loon Mountain, New Hampshire; Brighton Resort, Utah; Big Sky, Montana; Sugarloaf, Maine; and namesake Boyne Mountain Resort, Michigan.
Last week, Ski Area Management Magazine, known as SAM Mag, announced the recipients of their 2024 Sammy Leadership Awards, and Matt and Jeremy were two of the four honorees.
This is exceptionally cool because in the span of the snow industry, it is relatively recent that snowboarders took up the mantle in resort leadership. These two, along with peers at resorts from Oregon to Maine and beyond, are continually affecting the status quo of snowboarding (and skiing, too, of course) in an often-challenging environment (not only because of the climate shifts in the actual environment).
Both Jeremy and Matt have exemplary resumes. We recommend reading the full article on Sammag.com.
Jeremy started operating a snowcat at Vail in the late nineties before going on to run seminal crews at Mammoth and then Park City. His experience in the park is paramount in his role at Boyne, where he manages many aspects of the mountain operations side of things for all of Boyne resorts.
Matt’s career began as a professional snowboarder, competing in X Games and appearing in Warren Miller movies. He was a big part of Academy Snowboards before joining the crew at Boreal and Woodward Tahoe. His impact there was enormous and then in 2022, he took the marketing role at Palisades. Any resort that puts Matt in the marketing driver’s seat is going to see success.
Huge congratulations to Jeremy Cooper and Matt Peterson on this prestigious industry award. Congrats, of course, to Ellen Galbraith of Stevens Pass, Washington, and Katie Ertl of Aspen Skiing Company, who are doing incredible work fueled by their passion for skiing.
