Carlsbad, California’s own Shaun White just earned his third career Olympic gold medal, in his fourth appearance at the Olympic Winter Games. White took top honors in the halfpipe contest on Wednesday, February 14; White led the pack after the first run in a three-run final with a score of 94.25. White was ousted by Japan’s Ayumu Hirano, who secured a score of 95.25 on his second run. Then, in what was hailed the “biggest run of Shaun White’s life,” his third and final run, White soared to a score of 97.75 and secured the gold.

Hirano earned a silver medal while Scotty James of Australia earned bronze thanks to his first run score of 92.00.

White’s gold medal will sit on the mantle alongside gold hardwate from Torino (2006) and Vancouver (2010). Additionally, his victory was the 100th Olympic gold medal won by Team USA in Olympic Winter Games history. Team USA has now swept all four snowboard gold medals awarded thus far at the 2018 Games; White’s win follows both Red Gerard and Jamie Anderson’s slopestyle victories, and Chloe Kim’s halfpipe victory.

U.S. snowboarders Ben Ferguson (Bend, OR) finished fourth, while Chase Josey (Hailey, ID) placed sixth and Jake Pates (Eagle, CO) finished eighth.
