On Wednesday, the International Olympic Committee revealed that it favors Salt Lake City as the host for the 2034 Winter Olympics. This significant decision virtually assures the Games' return to Utah in just over a decade.

Karl Stoss, the chair of the future host commission for the Winter Games, conveyed in a press conference that the IOC's executive board has given the green light for "targeted dialogue" with Salt Lake City and U.S. Olympic Committee officials regarding the 2034 event. This new bid process implies that no other city will be considered for hosting the 2034 Olympics unless Salt Lake City fails to meet specific requirements, a scenario deemed highly unlikely. Alongside focusing on Salt Lake City for 2034, Stoss mentioned that the IOC is engaging in targeted dialogue with France for the 2030 Winter Games and holding "privileged dialogue" with Switzerland for 2038.

Formal announcements regarding the hosts for 2030 and 2034 are anticipated to be made during the IOC session in Paris in July, designating the French Alps and Salt Lake City for these respective years.
