Conditions: A mix of blue and gray skies, average temps, some wind, ice, chop, a light dusting of wet snow on top of groomers, and perfect corduroy.

Binding Adjustability: There’s some pretty standard stuff on this binding. With the highbacks you have the ability to rotate them as well as a very basic easy to use forward lean adjustment. The straps are on flip cams for lengthening and shortening them. The toe straps have a pin placement on the chassis to better center them. Finally you have the ability to slide the heelcup in or out.

Straps: The toe strap is their Aux Tech strap and my god does this thing grip. It just fits on to any boot shape and locks you down so well. The heel strap is a harder more rigid plastic with a center cut in it. This allows for more give over the instep but it also makes it feel softer when you flex into it diminishing the drive.

Ratchets: These things are huge and easy to feed the ladder into. They climb well and there’s no problem with the quick release tab. At the end of the day you want a ratchet that works and these do.

Highbacks: This is a very soft flexing minimally designed highback. It does what it needs to do. The nice thing is that it has a true zero forward lean meaning you’re not being forced to match your highback to your boot spine.

Binding Flex: The overall flex of this binding is soft. It has a lot of play to it and you notice that right away. If you like to drive into your straps you’ll feel the give. Like to drive on the outside or inside of the binding, still has a lot of play. It’s a more freestyle focused binding and the flex reflects that.

Ride: This is a more lively feel than the other Bataleon binding I rode. It doesn’t have as much dampening which is fine because it’s a freestyle binding.

Rider in Mind: Freestyle rider that likes a binding that works well but has a lot of give.

Personal Thoughts: This feels like it’s Bataleon’s version of the Rome 390 Boss but with different straps. I love the toe strap, the heel strap works but isn’t mind blowing. It’s a lively binding with a lot of play to it which is fine for what it is. Do I wish I could have gotten a little more power out of it? Sure. At the end of the day though it worked and it’s better than the Switchback inspired ones Bataleon is offering.
