Snowboard Iskola

On March 16th, Winter Park brought snowboarding to the city, offering free lessons at Ruby Hill Rail Yard in Ruby Park in Denver.

Ruby Hill Rail Yard started in 2007, a collaboration between Denver Parks and Recreation and Winter Park Resort. Each winter, Winter Park supplies rails and other features that are maintained throughout winter and free for everyone to enjoy.

Over the past few years, Ruby Hill Rail Yard has become a popular location for snowboard events, including the Burton Mystery Series and Erik Leon's CORE Nation. It's open every day, weather permitting, and free to use.

March 16th was the closing day of the Rail Yard and Winter Park instructors came down to Denver to provide lessons and rentals to anyone wanting to try snowboarding. 60 free rentals, including boots, boards, and helmets, were available to help get new riders fall in love with sliding downhill.

Bringing snowboarding lessons to the city started years ago, said a Winter Park representative, when the resort would bring snow and features to Denver for rail jams.

"A kid came up to me and commented how much appreciated he was that experience to the city of Denver and that kind of spurred the idea that we could do better than that, that we could actually bring a temporary terrain park and learning experience right into the heart of the city to this community," said the Winter Park representative.

Learning to snowboard can be an intimidating situation, not only from an ability standpoint, but also when it comes to gear, travel, and accessibility. Bringing snowboarding out of the mountains and closer to people who haven't gotten to experience it removes barriers to entry and provides meaningful opportunity to try it out. What an awesome thing that Winter Park and the City of Denver do!

The special event happens every year at the end of the Ruby Hill Rail Yard season.
